GENERAL COSMETIC TATTOO QUESTIONS
-
1. Can I get a cosmetic tattoo if I have broken or irritated skin in the treatment area?
No, you should not get a cosmetic tattoo if you have broken or irritated skin in the area to be treated.
Why: Tattooing on damaged or irritated skin can lead to complications such as infection, poor pigment retention, and delayed healing. It’s essential to allow the skin to fully heal before proceeding with the treatment. Please reschedule your appointment until the skin is in good condition.
-
2. Can I get a cosmetic tattoo if I have an autoimmune condition or am immunocompromised?
You can get a cosmetic tattoo, but it’s crucial to consult with your doctor first if you have an autoimmune condition or are immunocompromised.
Why: These conditions may affect how your body heals and how well it accepts the pigment. Slower healing times and higher risks of infection are common. Rest assured; our Artist uses the highest standard of cleanliness throughout procedures, but it's best to seek medical clearance from your doctor. They will advise whether it’s safe for you and may recommend extra precautions to ensure a safe healing process.
-
3. Can I get a tattoo if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
No, cosmetic tattooing is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Why: During pregnancy and breastfeeding, your body undergoes hormonal changes that can affect how the pigment settles and how your skin heals. Additionally, the risk of infection is slightly higher, and some anesthetics used in the procedure may not be safe for your baby. It’s best to wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding to get the procedure done. If you are breastfeeding and do want to have the procedure, you can opt to express then discard for the following 24 hours. Please seek advice from your GP or Midwife before making your booking.
-
4. Can I get a cosmetic tattoo if i'm under the age of 18?
You must be 18 years or older to receive a cosmetic tattoo.
Why: This is a permanent procedure, and legal regulations require clients to be of legal adult age. If you are under 18, you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. They will need to provide consent by signing a form on your behalf before the procedure can begin. This ensures that all safety and legal requirements are met.
-
5. Am I too old to get a cosmetic tattoo? I'm over 50! (This is a real question we get asked all the time)
Absolutely not! You are never too old to get a cosmetic tattoo.
Why: Age is not a limiting factor. What’s most important is your skin’s integrity, condition, type, and its ability to heal. Our technique is gentle and light-handed, tailored to your specific skin needs. We carefully select the right shape, pigment, needle, and technique for your skin type to ensure the best results. If you're unsure whether your skin is suitable for the procedure, feel free to book a consultation so we can assess your skin and guide you before making an appointment.
-
6. Are you SURE I'm not too old? I'm over 60! (Yes, this is a very real, repeated question)
Absolutely not! You’re never too old for a cosmetic tattoo. We have clients whom are in their 80's, their skin integrity and skin healing is amazing!
Why: As we age, the condition and type of our skin change, but this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy beautiful results. With mature skin, the layers of the dermis and epidermis can become inconsistent in depth, which may cause pigment to sit too superficial or too deep. Additionally, some clients may have areas with keratosis—a rough or peeling patch of skin that’s common in aging. If keratosis is present in the area to be tattooed, it can be difficult to implant pigment there, creating small patches where pigment may not settle.
This is exactly why having an experienced cosmetic tattoo artist is crucial, especially with delicate, mature skin. We take extra care to tailor our technique—using the right pigment, needle, and method to suit your skin. At Silver Lining Permanent Artistry, you’re in good hands, and we’ll guide you through the process to achieve the best results for your skin type. If you have any doubts, we encourage you to book a consultation so we can assess your skin before proceeding with the tattoo.
-
7. Can cosmetic tattooing help correct asymmetry in my brows, lips, or eyes?
Yes, cosmetic tattooing can effectively correct asymmetry.
Why: Asymmetry is common, and cosmetic tattooing is an excellent way to create balance and enhance symmetry. We take a personalized approach, carefully mapping and designing each area to complement your natural features. Whether it’s your brows, lips, or eyeliner, the tattooing process can help balance any unevenness and bring a harmonious look to your face. It's important to have an experienced artist who understands facial structure and symmetry to ensure the best results. At Silver Lining Permanent Artistry, we use a combination of precise techniques and gentle methods to achieve a natural, balanced look that suits your unique features.
-
8. I saw someone who had their cosmetic tattoo done and it looked block-colored. Is that what mine will look like?
Each artist has their own style and technique. During consultation, artists hopefully communicated with their clients on the design they were working to achieve. This would mean the result is a personal choice made by the wearer.
Why: Some artists prefer a block-color, highly saturated look, which may appeal to clients who want a bold, highly saturated result. At Silver Lining Permanent Artistry, we take a different approach. Our style is softer, using a pixelated technique to create a more natural look. Our goal is not 100% saturation but rather a "less is more" approach, creating soft, blended results that enhance your natural features without appearing overly bold. We tailor our technique to suit your individual preferences and skin type, ensuring your cosmetic tattoo feels like an effortless extension of your natural beauty.
-
9. Do I have to have a touchup after my initial appointment?
While it’s not mandatory, a touchup is highly recommended to achieve the best and longest-lasting results.
Why: The initial appointment sets the foundation for your cosmetic tattoo, but as your skin heals, the pigment may fade slightly, or small areas may need refining. That’s why 1 complimentary touchup is provided 6-12 weeks after the initial session. This ensures that the pigment settles evenly and any adjustments can be made to perfect the final result.
For cover-up work, 2 touchup appointments are typically recommended to ensure proper correction, and both are provided complimentary, spaced 6-12 weeks apart.
-
10. Is the touchup included in the cost of the initial appointment?
Yes, the cost of the initial appointment includes one complimentary touchup for new clients and two for cover-up work.
Why: This is to make sure your tattoo heals beautifully and achieves the desired result. While the initial appointment is the most important step, the touchup is where we fine-tune the pigment and shape, ensuring everything looks flawless and lasts long-term.
-
11. Why does cover-up work take three sessions?
Cover-up work typically requires three sessions to ensure optimal results and proper correction.
Why: When working over an existing tattoo, the skin already contains pigment, which can affect how the new pigment is absorbed. The first session focuses on correcting the shape and applying new pigments, but because of the pre-existing ink and variations in the skin, more refinement is needed. The second session (6-12 weeks later) helps adjust color, density, and symmetry, and ensures the new pigment holds properly. A third session (if needed) helps fine-tune any remaining areas to ensure the most even, balanced, and long-lasting result. This process is particularly important for achieving successful results with cover-ups, as older pigment can sometimes interfere with the new application. -
12. How is the color chosen for my cosmetic tattoo?
The color for your cosmetic tattoo is customized to suit your natural skin tone, hair color, and personal preferences.
Why: During your consultation, we will discuss your desired outcome, and I’ll recommend a pigment that complements your features while giving you the look you want. Whether you’re aiming for a natural or full glam appearance, the color is carefully chosen to ensure long-lasting results that flatter your complexion.
-
13. How painful is the cosmetic tattoo procedure?
Most clients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure.
Why: A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure, then secondary numbing is applied intermittently during the continuation of the tattooing to keep you comfortable. While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, clients generally describe the sensation as mild, similar to light scratching or pressure. Areas like the lips may be more sensitive, but the numbing cream helps reduce any discomfort.
-
14. What happens if I have an active or healing cold sore?
If you have an active or healing cold sore, we will need to reschedule your appointment.
Why: A cold sore is caused by the virus Herpes Simplex. This virus sits dormant in the human body until it is triggered by minor trauma to skin, stress and feeling run down. Tattooing over or near an active cold sore can cause the virus to spread, worsen the infection, and affect the healing process. Even if the cold sore is on not near the area needing tattoo, there is a high risk that the freshly tattooed area can develop cold sores. It’s important to allow the cold sore to fully heal before proceeding with a cosmetic tattoo to ensure the best results and avoid complications.
-
15. How long does a cosmetic tattoo last?
Cosmetic tattoos typically last anywhere between 2-4 years, depending on factors like skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare.
Why: Over time, the pigment will naturally fade as your body’s immune system works to break down and remove the pigment particles. The body’s natural defenses gradually treat the pigment as a foreign substance and slowly fade the color as a result. You’ll notice that the vibrancy of your tattoo will decrease over time, eventually requiring a touchup to restore the color. Factors like sun exposure, skin type, and products used on your skin can also influence how quickly the pigment fades.
-
16. Can I get anti-wrinkle treatment before or aftertattoo?
Yes you can! Please follow these guide lines:
Anti-wrinkle treatments must be done a minimum of 2 weeks before, or 4 weeks after your booked tattoo appointment.
2 weeks gives your injectable treatment the adequate time needed to achieve full strength. This means your facial muscles will be in their prime position and won’t affect our design process.
4 weeks post tattoo is adequate time for your skin healing. This means your injectable nurse is able to inject the area needed, without disrupting any healing tissue.
If you need to have anti wrinkle treatment before any touchups, you will want have your touchup booked minimum of two weeks after.
-
17. Can I have Dermal Filler before my tattoo?
Yes! You absolutely can. Please follow guide lines:
If you’re planning to have Dermal filler, we can book your tattoo appointment 6 weeks after. This gives the tissue adequate healing time, and the filler adequate time to settle.
Further more, your Injectable Nurse will be able to provide you more information and aftercare recommendations in regards to filler application.
-
18. I have Dermal Filler already, is that okay?
Having existing filler is usually not a problem.
If you have filler in your lips, as long as it was done a minimum of 6 weeks prior to your tattoo appointment, it shouldn’t be an issue. In most cases, it’s an advantage from a Cosmetic Tattoo Artist point of view. We don’t need to stretch lip tissue much, if at all.
This is not common, however the only issue we may see, is if the filler itself is causing dramatic asymmetry to the lip boarder or lip bulk, where it causes difficulty in creating lip symmetry. In rare cases, it may be advised to have lip filler dissolved (then redone if desired) before proceeding with tattoo booking.
-
19. Can I have laser facials after tattoo?
Yes you can, please follow guidelines:
Any type of laser can be used around the tattoo, however it cannot be used directly on the area that has been tattooed. Cosmetic tattoo pigments are not laser friendly, its important to let your Laser Technician know which areas have been tattooed prior to laser application.
-
20. Can I have chemical peels before or after tattoo?
Yes you can, please follow guidelines:
Chemical peels must be performed 6 weeks prior to your tattoo booking, or 6 weeks after.
6 weeks gives the skin adequate time to complete its healing cycle. The skin is usually ready to receive tattoo by the end of 6 weeks.
After tattoo, the tattooed area must be avoided by any peeling solutions, to stop premature fading occurring.
Your Esthetician can provide more information on your chosen facial treatments, it is important to let them know which areas you have tattooed prior to your treatment.
CORRECTION & COVER UP FAQ
-
What is a cosmetic tattoo cover-up / correction work?
A cover-up involves correcting or enhancing a previous cosmetic tattoo done by another artist.
Why: Sometimes the original tattoo may fade unevenly, the shape might need refining, or the pigment color may have changed over time. A cover-up works to address these issues by adjusting the design, shape, and color to create a fresh, balanced look.
-
Can you fix my existing cosmetic tattoo with a cover-up?
Yes, we can often improve or correct your existing cosmetic tattoo with a cover-up.
Why: Our focus with correction or cover-up work is to enhance the shape and color of the existing tattoo. We aim to rebalance the design to create a more harmonious and natural look that complements your facial features, bone structure, eye shape, or lips. The goal is not only to correct the previous work but to refine it, ensuring that your permanent makeup looks balanced and enhances your natural beauty. Each cover-up is tailored to suit your individual needs, giving you a fresh, improved result.
-
How many sessions does a cover up take?
Cover-up work typically takes three sessions.
Why: The first session addresses major corrections and lays down new pigments. The second and third sessions, spaced 6-12 weeks apart, allow for refinement and proper pigment saturation. This multi-step process ensures the new design holds well and blends seamlessly with the old tattoo.
-
Will my cover up look natural?
At Silver Lining Permanent Artistry, we aim for a natural, subtle result.
Why: Our cover-up technique is designed to blend the new pigment with the existing tattoo, using soft pixelation and a "less is more" approach to create a natural-looking enhancement that complements your features. The extra sessions that come with booking cover up, are mostly used to reworking and neutralizing the preexisting tattoo.
-
Can a cover-up change the color of my original tattoo?
Yes, a cover-up can correct the color of a previous tattoo.
Why: If the original pigment has faded to an undesired shade (e.g., gray or orange), we can neutralize the old color and apply a fresh pigment that suits your skin tone and desired look.
-
Can you fix asymmetry in my previous tattoo?
Yes, cover-up work can help correct asymmetry in brows, lips, or eyeliner.
Why: We carefully assess the original tattoo and design a new shape to balance and correct any unevenness. This requires precision, especially for cover-ups, and multiple sessions ensure that the final result is as symmetrical and natural as possible.
-
Can any cosmetic tattoo be covered up?
It depends on the condition of the existing tattoo.
Why: Factors like scar tissue, the color, depth, and shape of the old tattoo can affect the ability to perform a successful cover-up. Darker or deeply saturated pigments may require laser removal before a new design can be applied. A consultation will help determine the best approach.
-
Will a cover-up fade over time?
Yes, just like any cosmetic tattoo, a cover-up will fade gradually over time.
Why: Your body’s immune system will break down the pigment particles, causing the tattoo to fade. The rate of fading depends on skin type, pigment used, lifestyle, and sun exposure, but touchups are recommended every 1-2 years to keep the tattoo looking fresh.
-
Is there anything that can’t be fixed with a cover-up?
Some cases may require laser removal before a cover-up.
Why: If the original tattoo is too dark, large, or deeply saturated, it may not be possible to cover it with new pigment alone. In these cases, laser tattoo removal can lighten the area, making it easier to apply a fresh design.
-
I'm happy with my existing work even though it was done by another artist, can I ask why you call it cover-up work?
We use the term "cover-up" or "correction work" whenever we're working over a previous tattoo done by another artist. Artists typically have different vision of the perfect cosmetic tattoo for its wearer. We approach cover-up with a fresh perspective to rebalance the shape and saturation according to what we see. If the existing work aligns with our artistic style, or we believe you do not need three sessions, we may look to consider adjusting the appointment type to an initial appointment, or in some rare cases, consider it an annual/bi annual touchup.
Why: The goal of cover-up or correction work isn’t always about fixing bad results. It’s about enhancing and rebalancing the shape, color, or design to ensure the tattoo continues to complement your current features and preferences. When we work over existing pigment, we consider how the old tattoo interacts with your skin and bone structure, and we make adjustments to ensure a fresh, long-lasting look. This ensures that your permanent makeup continues to look its best and stays aligned with your vision.
-
You recommended laser tattoo removal before we can begin any correction work. Can you tell me how laser removal works and where I can get it done?
If we recommended Laser tattoo removal, it means that the skin is tightly saturated with pigment, making it impossible to implant new pigment. Laser removal is an effective way to lighten or remove existing pigment molecules, making it easier for us to apply new pigment for your cosmetic tattoo correction.
How it works:
Laser tattoo removal uses a concentrated beam of laser light to target the pigment in your tattoo. The laser breaks down the pigment particles into smaller fragments, which are then gradually eliminated by your body’s immune system. Depending on the size, color, and depth of the original tattoo, it can take multiple sessions to achieve the desired level of lightening or removal. Darker colors and more saturated pigments often take more sessions, but lighter and smaller tattoos may require fewer. The treatment may cause some mild discomfort, similar to the feeling of snapping a rubber band against the skin, but numbing cream is often applied to help with pain management. After the session, the area will need time to heal before any further work can be done.
Where to get it done:
You can find laser tattoo removal services at dermatology clinics, laser treatment centers, and some aesthetic practices that specialize in tattoo removal. It’s important to choose a professional and reputable clinic to ensure safe and effective results. I can recommend trusted clinics in your area or provide referrals for you to consult with, so you feel confident moving forward with the process.
