Annual / Biannual Color Refresher
For clients who have had their lip tattoo completed by me previously, this annual or biannual color refresher is designed to keep your lips looking vibrant and fresh. Over time, factors like skin type and lifestyle can cause pigment to naturally fade, and this service helps maintain the beautiful results we initially achieved. By refreshing the color and refining the shape, we ensure your lips continue to look their best with minimal upkeep.
This service is perfect for clients who want to maintain the longevity and vibrancy of their lip tattoo, keeping it looking as flawless as the day it was first done. Regular touchups every 18 - 30 months help ensure your lips always feel fresh, defined, and true to the look we created together.
Lip Tattoo Prerequisite
To ensure the best results for your lip tattoo and to protect your lip health, it’s essential that all clients obtain a course of herpes simplex antiviral tablets, such as Acyclovir or a similar medication, prior to their appointment. You will need to start taking the medication on the day of the tattoo. The tattooing process can cause minor trauma to the lip membrane, which may trigger cold sores—even if you’ve never had them before. Cold sores can negatively impact the healing process, potentially leading to uneven healing and pigment loss, affecting both the short- and long-term success of the tattoo.
For this reason, it is mandatory to begin the antiviral treatment on the day of your appointment. This precaution ensures that your lips heal smoothly and helps prevent complications that could arise from cold sores. We provide a letter of explanation for you to take to your GP or pharmacist, which will help you obtain the required antiviral medication, such as Acyclovir.
Taking this medication is vital not only for the health of your lips but also to ensure the long-lasting beauty of your lip tattoo and investment.
LIP INSIGHTS
Avoid alcohol and caffeine for at least 24 hours before the appointment
Why: Both alcohol and caffeine act as blood thinners, which can increase bleeding during the procedure. Excessive bleeding can affect how the pigment is absorbed into the skin, leading to patchy or uneven results.
Avoid lip fillers for at least 2 weeks before your appointment
Why: Lip fillers can change the shape and volume of your lips. For the most accurate and long-lasting results, it's important that your lips are in their natural state when the tattooing is done.
Do not wax or thread the lip area for 1 week before your appointment
Why: Waxing or threading can irritate the skin around the lips, making it more sensitive and prone to damage during the tattoo procedureNo sun exposure or tanning for at least 2 weeks before your appointment
Why: Sunburned or tanned skin is more sensitive and prone to damage during the tattooing process. Pigment may not settle properly on sun-damaged skin, and the healing process may be more uncomfortable and uneven.
Stop using retinol, retinoids, or exfoliants for 1-2 weeks
Why: Retinol and exfoliating products thin the skin, making it more sensitive. Thinner skin can lead to increased bleeding and difficulty in holding the pigment, which can compromise the final result of the tattoo.
Avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, or tinting your brows for at least 2 weeks before the procedure
Why: Your artist needs to work with the natural shape and full hair growth of your brows to design a shape that complements your face. Waxing, tweezing, or tinting beforehand can distort the natural shape and reduce the canvas for tattooing.
No Botox or fillers for 2 weeks prior
Why: Botox or filler injections can alter the natural positioning and shape of your brows. To achieve the most accurate and flattering result, it's important that your facial muscles are in their natural state during the tattooing process.
Consult your doctor if you are on blood thinners or medications
Why: Certain medications, such as blood thinners, can increase bleeding during the procedure, and also raise your chances of bruising, which may affect how well the pigment settles into the skin. It's important to consult your doctor to seek medical clearance for peace of mind, prior to booking your appointment.
Stay hydrated and moisturize your skin leading up to the appointment
Why: Hydrated skin makes the tattooing process smoother and promotes better healing. When your skin is well-hydrated, it’s more elastic and resilient, allowing the pigment to settle more evenly. Dry or dehydrated skin, on the other hand, can be more prone to flaking and slow healing. Be sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment and keep your skin moisturized, avoiding any products with harsh chemicals or exfoliants.
These guidelines ensure that your skin is in the best condition for the procedure, optimizing the final result and helping the healing process.
Pre-Care
Gently clean your lips with cooled boiled water and cotton rounds/tips before each application of aftercare balm
Why: Cleaning your lips with cooled boiled water helps remove any build-up of lymph fluid or bacteria, promoting proper healing. It also ensures the area is clean before applying the aftercare balm, preventing infection and helping the balm absorb better into the skin.
Apply a thin layer of aftercare balm consistently
Why: Keeping a thin layer of aftercare balm on your lips at all times helps to protect the healing skin, prevent excessive dryness, and keep the pigment intact. Too much balm can clog the skin, while too little can cause dryness, slowing down the healing process. Apply it as directed by your artist, usually 3 times a day, or after cleaning.Avoid touching or picking at your lips
Why: The lips will form small scabs during healing, and it’s important not to pick at them. Picking can lead to pigment loss, uneven healing, or infection. Allow the scabs to flake off naturally over the 5-10 day healing period.Keep your lips dry for the first 5-10 days
Why: Avoid direct contact with water, as moisture can interfere with the healing process and cause premature loss of pigment. Be cautious while eating or drinking, and avoid activities like swimming during the initial healing phase.Avoid spicy, salty, or acidic foods for the first few days
Why: Spicy, salty, or acidic foods can irritate the freshly tattooed lips, causing discomfort or slowing the healing process. Stick to milder foods that won’t come into direct contact with the lips.Do not apply makeup or skincare products to the lips during healing
Why: Applying makeup or skincare products to the healing area can introduce bacteria, cause irritation, or lead to uneven healing. Stick to the provided aftercare balm until your lips are fully healed.Avoid sun exposure and tanning
Why: Sun exposure can cause the pigment to fade prematurely and may result in uneven healing. Protect your lips from direct sunlight by wearing a hat or staying indoors during the healing phase.Stay away from facials, exfoliants, or skin treatments for at least 4 weeks
Why: Skin treatments can irritate the healing lips and affect pigment retention. Avoid any skin treatments near the lip area until it is fully healed to prevent complications.Healing takes 5-10 days for the surface
Why: Your lips will go through several stages of healing. It typically takes 5-10 days for the surface to heal and for scabbing to flake off naturally. However, full healing may take several weeks, during which time the color may lighten and settle into its final shade.
Following these aftercare instructions will help ensure a smooth healing process and preserve the longevity and vibrancy of your lip tattoo.
